T.S. (TRAINING SHIP) BENDIGO, NAVAL CADET UNIT EXCELS IN SHOOTING PROGRAM

SSAA Bendigo Branch has welcomed their local Naval Cadet unit to the first of five shooting sessions at the Marong Rifle Range. These sessions are spaced over the year, and will include Rimfire Rifle, Centerfire Rifle, Shotgun and Military Rifle disciplines.

The program commenced on Saturday 24th of February, with 39 Cadets, split into morning and afternoon groups, arriving at the Range. After a thorough explanation of Range rules and safety procedures, the Cadets were introduced to the shooting sports via the eternal favourite, the scoped .22 rifle.

Beginning with benchrest at 25mtrs, the target x-rings were soon getting shredded by these eagle-eyed youngsters. The target boards were moved back to 50mtrs, and with a few minor scope adjustments, followed by some skilled coaching by the Bendigo branch trainers, some exceptional shooting ensued.

Each Cadet had their tightest groups measured, and while most achieved sub-1/2 inch groups with five shots, the morning and afternoon groups boasted smallest groups measuring .321" and .319" respectively. If this was surprising, the scores shot on a 20 bull target sheet had the training group totally amazed, with some of the top scores (199.7 out of 200) on a par with placegetters at the last trophy shoot!

We hope these targets get pride of place on the refrigerator door!

The T.S. Bendigo unit should be very proud of the way the Cadets performed, with every young shooter showing improvement over each session, while displaying the highest standards of safety and disciplined behaviour.

I would like to personally thank the Bendigo members who volunteered their time, expertise, and firearms, to share their enjoyment of shooting with others. I'm already looking forward to the next session in April.

Vic Alexander
Bendigo Branch President
