Youth Training Scheme (YTS)
The SSAA (Vic) have developed the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) to teach Juniors the art of Shooting. With a club-based junior shooting program for youth 12-25 years of age.
What does the YTS offer?
- Variety - many disciplines able to cater for a large cross-section of kids.
- Accessibility - highly suitable for the child not interested or able to participate in the more physical pursuits.
- Alternative skill usage - emphasis on psychology of sport and disciplined mental training.
- Discipline - shooting requires strict adherence to rules and procedures which are strictly enforced by our coaches.
- Education - a positive learning environment with respect to the safe use of firearms.
- Competition - exposure to regular competition.
- Quality coaching - from the first lesson to the elite level, coaching is available from accredited coaches.
Where can I find a YTS?
YTS at Springvale
The YTS meets on the 1st Sunday of each month from 12:30pm at the SSAA Springvale Range. Trips to other ranges are organised regularly in order to provide opportunities to try out different disciplines not on offer at Springvale.
The YTS is able to cater for up to 39 juniors at each monthly meeting. Bookings are essential. Please direct initial enquiries to the State office.
Cost is $10 per shooter to cover the cost of ammunition. Firearms are available for use free of charge. Parental involvement is appreciated and juniors under the age of 14 must have a parent/family member with them.
YTS at Eagle Park
This program is based on the YTS at Springvale and has the advantage of being able to regularly participate in shotgun shooting. The Eagle Park juniors meet on the 3rd Sunday of each month beginning at 12:30pm onwards, cost is $15.
Bookings are essential as firearms are not as readily available at this range and need to be arranged. Parental involvement is appreciated and encouraged. For more information and to book in please contact the State Office on (03) 8892 2777
YTS at Bendgio
Bendigo branch is local at the Marong Rifle Range, Serpentine Road, Marong.
The YTS is open to any person between the ages of 12 and 18 years. The experienced and qualified supervising instructors follow a structured program, which emphasises firearm safety, while allowing trainees to progress throguh a competency based qualification system. As skill levels are increased, so are the types of shooting available to the participants.
A fee of $5 is charged to cover all ammunition costs, with firearms, instruction, targets and insurance provided free of charge.

YTS at Bairnsdale
The East Gippsland Branch of the SSAA (Vic) hold a Youth Training Scheme based at the Bairnsdale Pistol Club. The group meets on the 3rd Sunday of every month at the Barinsdale Pistol club range and shoots .22 rifles from 10am to 1pm. Cost is $5 per session.
